AI has largely become the future of how we can improve our world. AI is able to research, write, detect disease, and now be used for war. AI is redefining how war is going to be conducted in the future.
The Australian Foreign Minister is worried about the speedy development of AI and autonomous weapons systems, fearing that the regulations will not come in time to halt the use of the technology. The foreign minister is not wrong. The technology is developing rapidly.
German firms have been developing technology that can locate targets without human control. The only failsafe that is keeping the AI from firing weapons is humans. The AI technology can be set to fire when targets are located. Some technology has the ability to detect certain clothing and patches to distinguish between friendlies and the enemy.
Human control over AI is the most important piece in keeping the technology at bay. Like human’s, AI can still make mistakes, but AI can also transform the defense industry. Yes it can change the battlefield. Equipping soldiers with the right tools, technology that can detect enemies, but it can also detect maintenance concerns.
A company called C3 AI, a civilian firm, is using the technology to do just that. Machinery has its faults, as well is holding the stresses of being used in the field and for field missions. This technology C3 has created is able to predict issues with machinery before they arise. This technology can become important in keeping our technology from breaking down.
AI is going to be an important part of the future for our defense policy. But that’s just it, there needs to be more policy and regulations. Without policy, the technology can get out of hand and even into the wrong hands. Policy regulations can help the technology improve so it is used properly and to the highest of standards. Human control over the technology is the only way to keep it from becoming a weapon of mass destruction.
