The world has always revolved around the West. Its rise came from conquering lands, waging wars, and developing the latest and the greatest technology. From this rise came the most powerful countries on earth. The United States became the most powerful country to ever exist. The United Kingdom and Europe formed a formidable block with great influence. China and Japan have risen to heights unimaginable. These countries come together and make the world run. If any one of these countries’ economies tanks, it brings the world economies with it.
Now I may be exaggerating a little bit about the power and influence of these countries (but not really). The developed world dominates trade, influence, and military might, and leads the world in technology and cultural influence. But there is one thing I know for certain that is changing our global landscape. The rise of the Global South.
The combined GDP of the Global South has almost hit $40 trillion. Now the United States and China may equal that alone, it shows a significant advancement in the developing world. The developing world is looking to spread its influence. The G77 created in 1964 by a group of developing nations now has over 134 members. The bloc is hoping to spread its influence with numbers. Each nation also wants to get a piece of the global pie.

To develop you need technology and capital. The developed world has that. Now the Global South is looking to exchange resources for capital and technology. Africa is a prime example of this. China promised many developing African states capital and infrastructure in exchange for natural resources. But China has been known to exploit African resources and labor, and trap nations in millions of dollars of debt. The Global South is fed up.
The bloc is expanding, and they are trying to grow their influence. The Global South is tired of being exploited and ignored. That is why when the US called on the world to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, a good chunk did not align. Their power will only grow stronger as they develop. This is exactly why the West needs to strengthen its relationship with the Global South. Increased trade, security alliances, and information sharing will strengthen partnerships and create a more equal world. The West can no longer ignore the rest. It must cooperate and lend its hand.
