On September 26, South Korea held its first military parade since 2013. In a show of strength to partners, adversaries, and its citizens, South Korea is looking to exert itself on the world stage. But there are clear reasons for that. North Korea has been threatening the use of nuclear weapons. Recently, the North Korean government created a constitutional amendment to advance its nuclear arsenal. South Korea is afraid of North Korean aggression, seeking partnerships with the United States and Japan.
The militarization of the Korean Peninsula will cause a geopolitical nightmare. South Korea has mentioned in the past that it will consider building a nuclear missile if North Korea continues to grow its nuclear arsenal. The United States negotiated with President Yoon to send a nuclear submarine to the peninsula. South Korea is ready to respond to the growing threat. President Yoon made a statement that “If North Korea uses nuclear weapons, its regime will be brought to an end by an overwhelming response from the (Seoul-Washington) alliance.”
The comments made by Yoon will be taken as a clear sign of aggression towards North Korea. The threat of a potential war will derail eastern Asia. Both the United States and China will want to avoid any form of conflict within the region. Strategically both sides know that conflict would be catastrophic and deteriorate the world economy.
The United States needs to take a few measures to prevent conflict. The nuclear submarine is an important step in deterring North Korean aggression. Some may argue it can enhance aggression but the North Koreans understand they still do not have the capabilities to counter the United States. The United States needs to establish a dialogue with China, a close ally of North Korea, and ask to negotiate with the North Koreans to de-escalate the situation. The United States also needs to work with South Korea and Japan to assure their security within the region to help ease any tensions they may have.
The dangers that the Korean peninsula is showcasing may be the next step in adding conflict to our world. After enduring many years of peace post the fall of the Soviet Union, we seem to be heading onto the path of violence. Policymakers around the world need to work together and de-escalate potential conflicts.
